How do you tell holograms from swirls and shallow scratches?

Holograms are round rainbow-like shapes, almost always a sign of wrong rotary polishing (10,000+ RPM). Swirls are fine circular lines from bad microfiber. Shallow scratches are single lines from cement dust. Each requires a different abrasive compound.

Why do you use a Rupes DA instead of a rotary polisher?

The Rupes DA runs 5,000–8,000 RPM with a 21 mm orbit and keeps the clear coat at 35–40 °C. A rotary hits 70–80 °C — that burns through clear coat faster and creates hologram risk. On premium cars we only use DA.

How much clear coat is removed per polishing session?

A Menzerna three-step removes 3–7 µm of clear coat. Factory paint is typically 60–80 µm, aftermarket 40–60 µm. That's why we gauge beforehand — below 50 µm, a heavy polish is no longer advisable.

What does a ceramic coating add on top of polishing?

Polishing only removes defects. Ceramic (SiO₂-based) adds a 2–3 µm layer with 9H hardness, a hydrophobic effect (> 110° contact angle), and 24–36 months of UV protection. Polishing + ceramic is the optimum — neither one alone is enough.
